As you may be aware on 9th April 2021, Prince Phillip, The Duke of Edinburgh, passed away aged 99. As a school community we would like to pass on our condolences to the Royal Family and particularly the Queen during this sad time.

Tor View School has seen directly the benefit of some of the work that Prince Phillip did, noticeably via the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme that supports, equips and empowers young people from all communities to build the skills, confidence, and resilience they need to make the most out of life.  Tor View have been part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award for 10 years and in that time have worked closely with our young adults to build skills and become responsible young adults ready to take on new challenges and develop their independence.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award has three levels, Bronze, Silver and Gold. Here at Tor View we encourage our Key Stage 4 learners to enrol on the Bronze Award and support them to complete all four sections which include; Skills, Physical, Volunteering and Expedition. In recent years through taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme school has supported local care homes and taken part in the Youth Enterprise Challenge in association with Rossendale Hospice to raise funds for them by completing a voluntary car wash. It is through the D of E scheme that learners have the opportunity to work together as part of a team to achieve a common goal developing vital skills including communication and life skills. As part of our skills sections we have learnt how to use Makaton sign language to help others and become better communicators. Our learners have the flexibility to tailor the programme to meet their needs and some of the skills that learners this year have chosen to complete include; Electronics, cookery, song writing, learning an instrument, darts, parkour and juggling. D of E really does support everyone to achieve to the best of their ability.

The Duke of Edinburgh Scheme also include an expedition which involves 2 days walking (at least 6 hours) and an overnight camp (pre COVID) at Bronze level. To complete this learners have to familiar with map reading and also how to keep safe in a rural environments as well as good teamwork and communication skills as well as promote mental health and wellbeing through accessing outdoors.

Tor View School will continue to inspire, learn, enjoy and achieve through the good work of the Duke of Edinburgh scheme and support all our participants to achieve to the best of their ability.
