What is Hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy is the use of water to support therapeutic progress for people with mobility difficulties such as Cerebral Palsy.

Hydrotherapy has two core purposes:

  • To develop muscle tone, core strength and mobility.
  • For therapeutic purposes – to reduce pain.

The pool is warm to support our children and young people to relax their muscles to enable them to get the best out of the therapy.

How is Hydrotherapy used at Tor View?

At Tor View, we are very lucky to have our own Hydrotherapy pool. We consider Hydrotherapy to be a core part of our curriculum where it is required for our learners with Physical Disabilities. Our students access Hydrotherapy as dictated by their EHCP and dependent upon their needs. Mrs Dawson, our Swimming Teacher, has completed specialist Hydrotherapy training and creates bespoke therapy programmes in collaboration with parents, carers, children and Physiotherapists. Our students develop better mobility and control of their muscles and limbs as the water supports their weight and the temperature encourages their muscles to relax. The sessions are fun and exciting so that the children and young people remain engaged and sometimes even forget that they’re learning. In each session, Mrs Dawson is supported by the pool assistant or T.A.
