During Summer Term 1 we are due to learn about fruit.

You can practice the following skills at home, with an adult supervising: Washing, Peeling, Chopping

Each week I will add a link to a recipe for you to try at home Ask your adult to support you in the kitchen, DO NOT try and make anything without telling an adult first. In addition to the recipes there are some ideas for variations which you could try (these are for those who work Independently in the school kitchen – please contact e.pemberton@theviewtrust.org if you are unsure which group you/your learner is in).

There are also some extension activities and worksheets.

Washing

It is important to wash all fruit before you use it.

Put berries in a sieve and run them under a cold tap, swirling them with your hands.

Use a clean cloth or sponge to wash apples, pears, plums with clean cold water.

Peeling

Some fruits like bananas, oranges and grapefruit have skins which peel off easily.

For other fruits such as apples and pears you will need to use a peeler.

There are different types of peeler, use whichever you have at home and practice on different types of fruit.

Chopping

Always use a chopping board when chopping fruit. Only use a knife with permission from your adult.

We use two different ways to hold our fruit when chopping it, a bridge hold or a claw hold (visual instructions below), use which ever you prefer.

This week I want you to experiment with different smoothie ideas. If you don’t have a blender use a whisk or mash the fruit before adding to liquids. I’ve included a variety of different smoothie recipes. I’ve also included a design your own smoothie activity and an activity you could try with the whole family ‘Guess the Smoothie’.
